Emulsion with Acrylic
Realistically, 100% acrylic coatings used as cool roof materials are no more waterproof than the average low-grade exterior wall paints. Acrylics are deficient in providing waterproof protection and durability.
Most roof coating “systems” are comprised of inexpensive black emulsions that are the “waterproofing” element of the system with a white “reflective” acrylic topcoat.
The problem is the waterproofing is on the bottom. Moisture/water infiltrates the acrylic and sits on the black emulsion. When the water tries to evaporate, it makes a big blister in the white coating. Over time, the bubble splits open exposing the black “waterproofing”. Fabric in the acrylic does help extend the time between application and failure, but the fabric is not waterproof by itself either.
The black material is deteriorated by the UV rays and absorbs heat which accelerates the process. At the end of the cycle the materials are unable to provide waterproofing, thermal emittance or reflectivity.

Asphalt BUR System
The SureCoat Roof System is waterproof from surface to substrate. Innovative chemistry makes it impossible for the Sun’s UV rays to bake the energy saving or waterproofing attributes out of the coating. With continuous bonding ability, the SureCoat Roof material adheres to all clean prepared substrates without a primer or base coat. The SureCoat Roof System has a high solid content producing 10.426 dry mils per gallon.
